Greek Police have arrested a 39-year-old Georgian male, who is being described as the leading member of the group that committed a robbery and murder on the Greek island of Hydra this past August.
An elderly couple who lived and owned a restaurant on the island had fallen victim to a home burglary in mid-August. Greek police concluded that the perpetrators had been observing the couple for some time and were targeting them for profits they had made from their restaurant business prior to committing the crime.
According to Greek media reports, the burglars drugged the wife and the husband after questioning them about potential cash and jewelry in the house. The 58-year-old woman regained her consciousness, but her 67-year-old husband, who had sustained physical injuries during the burglary, passed away. It was reported that the robbers took a briefcase that contained 40,000 euros.
An official police statement claims the arrested individual was found in the area of Kalithea in Attica. His identity had been revealed to the authorities primarily due to DNA tests on blood that had been found in the victims’ house. Police revealed that he had been previously arrested in 2011 on charges of theft, illegal possession of a firearm and illegal entry into the country. Although he had been sentenced to 10 years and four months in prison, he was released in July 2015.
Seven other people, all Georgian citizens, had been previously arrested for their involvement in the robbery on Hydra.
