Greek PM Tsipras Stresses Importance of Cooperation with Turkey on Refugee Issue

eu_malta708Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras said that the only way to tackle the refugee crisis is for Greece and Turkey to cooperate on stemming the migrant inflow.
Tsipras spoke after the completion of the informal European Union summit on the refugee issue in Malta.
“The only way to stem the flow of refugees and migrants is to cooperate with Turkey… The only opportunity to stop the inflow, that no country can handle, much less Greece, is through a mutual agreement with Turkey,” Tsipras stated.
The Greek prime minister suggested that financial aid should be given to Turkey in order to guard its borders better and for the registration and relocation process to be completed in the neighboring country. This way refugees will avoid the deadly route through the Aegean. He also said he will discuss all pertaining issues with his Turkish counterpart Ahmet Davutoglu during his visit to Ankara on Wednesday.
During the summit, the Greek PM stressed that the number of refugees allocated for each country must be increased, and it should be binding and not voluntary. He said that it is not fair for Greece with so many problems to host more refugees than others, while other countries raise borders.
The EU leaders decided that there will be an EU-Turkey summit on the refugee issue on November 29.
