Greeks March in Honor of 1973 Student Uprising in Athens

polytechneioThousands of Greeks hit the streets of Athens on Tuesday in honor of the student uprising against the Greek dictatorship that took place on this day in 1973.
Greek citizens, including organized blocs such as the All Workers Militant Front (PAME) and the Greek Communist Party’s bloc, marched across the centre of Athens in honor of the revolt. The Athens Macedonian News Agency cites Greek police claim that up to 15,000 people participated in this year’s March.
The march concluded outside of the United States embassy. The marchers, who had been carrying a Greek flag throughout the march, sang the Greek national anthem in front of the embassy, before folding the flag and leaving the site.
The marchers also stopped in front of the French embassy and held a moment of silence in honor of the 129 people who died from Friday’s terrorist attacks in Paris.
Prior to the march two people had been arrested for possession of firecrackers.
Citizens commemorated the uprising, which is also known as the Polytechnic uprising, in other Greek cities, including Thessaloniki and Ioannina.
Earlier in the day, Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras had paid tribute to the people who lost their lives on November 17, 1973 by laying a wreath at the Polytechnic monument in Athens. His appearance was marred by a group of anarchists who shouted against his presence at the site.
