Cyprus Not Under Terrorist Threat According to Cypriot Minister

cyprus policeCyprus has no information regarding any threat or danger, but is acting in a preventive way with a view to maintaining a high level of security, Justice and Public Order Minister Ionas Nicolaou said on Tuesday, when asked about the measures taken after the terrorist attacks in Paris.
In statements to the press after a meeting of the Council of Ministers, Nicolaou said that since last Saturday, additional measures have been taken: a meeting was held at the Police Headquarters and an additional evaluation took place, with a view to reinforcing measures taken at specific places. He added that such assessments take place on a regular basis.
“Today we will assess the checks at the crossing points, tomorrow we will assess the checks at the airports and our effort is to act with a view to prevent any possible threat for our country,” he added.
Nicolaou noted that “since last February we have implemented a series of measures as regards the points of entrance to the Republic of Cyprus, the airports, the ports, the crossing points, the checks at the Green Line, as well as intense checks with guards at certain locations, such as diplomatic missions and venues of foreign countries’ interest, including schools.”
He said that these measures are being assessed regularly, adding that three evaluations have taken place so far. He noted that the most recent assessment took place ten days ago and that a continuous effort is underway to make all of these more effective.
Invited to comment on information that British journalists had suggested attempting to enter Cyprus with a replica gun in their luggage to test the island’s security level, Nicolaou said that everyone is being checked and nobody will be allowed to question the level of security, either at the airports or elsewhere.
Furthermore, he noted that undocumented immigrants who arrive in Cyprus are also being checked. “Our effort is to maintain a high level of security,” he concluded.
