Greece’s top migration official denied today suggestions that Greece’s place in the EU’s passport-free Schengen zone is in jeopardy because of the incompetent handling of the migrant crisis.
Several European ministers and senior EU officials believe that threatening suspension from the Schengen zone could persuade Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras to “deliver on his promises and take up EU offers of help.”
Yannis Mouzalas Greek Minister of Migration stated that ” certain EU countries were “falsely” accusing Athens over shortcomings shared by the bloc as a whole, such as delays in repatriating economic migrants” he added “We have organized returns to Pakistan that were not accepted, and we are trying to organize returns to Turkey that are also not accepted.”
Greece is pressured to step up border vigilance especially after it was confirmed that the November 13 jihadist had passed through the Greek island of Leros.
