Greece’s Ministry of Defense is to allocate two army camps to be used as migrant reception centers as the country is facing problems accommodating migrants who don’t qualify as refugees.
The two camps are located in Attica and in northern Greece and it is reported that they can accommodate 2,000 migrants each.
Athens Mayor Giorgos Kaminis criticized the government for not having a plan to accommodate migrants and the defense ministry in particular for not providing vacant army camps for the purpose.
“There is the risk of having thousands of people without refugee status trapped in Greece,” Kaminis said on Skai television on Thursday morning. “People from Morocco, Algeria, Pakistan and Bangladesh. We don’t want these people wandering in our cities without food and without prospects.”
Referring to a past event, Kaminis said that, “Six hundred Syrians had camped at Syntagma Square in protest and the government was paralyzed. There are vacant army camps all over the country, vacant spaces. Why don’t they open those camps? I ask the authorities but they are hiding.”
Meanwhile, Greek Police on Thursday have started transferring hundreds of migrants from the former Olympic taekwondo arena at Palaio Faliro to the former hockey arena at Elliniko.
