Turkish Frigate Reportedly Challenged Cypriot Ship Operating Within Cypriot EEZ

A Turkish brigade allegedly confronted a Cypriot ship in Cypriot waters, causing an official reaction from Cyprus.
Cypriot newspaper “Fileleutheros” reported that on Thursday afternoon a Turkish frigate approached the ” Flying Enterprises”, a ship operating with a Cypriot flag within the Cypriot Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) around 30 nautical miles off the coast of Pafos, and ordered it to move away from the specific area, while also claiming that it needs to receive authorization to reappear in the area in the future.
Fileleutheros further claims that “Flying Enterprises” was composed mostly by an American staff and was conducting research in the area having obtained all the proper permits. The ship reported the incident to its Cypriot base, which in turn informed it that it should go on with its planned work. “Flying Enterprises” did continue its work while the Turkish frigate stood close by.
Acting Cypriot President Yiannakis Oikonomou noted on Friday that if the publication was accurate, and such an encounter did in fact take place within the Cypriot EEZ, with a ship with the proper authorization, it “constitutes an act of piracy” and Cyprus should complain to the European Union and the United Nations.
