18 Refugees Drown in the Aegean Sea

migrant-rescue-missionYet another boat transporting migrants and refugees from Turkey to Greece capsized, leading to 18 casualties on Friday evening.
Among the people who drowned, ten were children, local media outlets report. The boat had departed from the Turkish shores and was heading to the Greek island of Kalymnos. Kalymnos has had 8,948 migrant and refugee arrivals this year, the United Nations Refugee Agency reports.
The Turkish coast guard rescued the remaining 14 people that were on the boat, including Syrians, Pakistanis and Iraqis.
This is the latest fatal episode of a recurring phenomenon. The International Organization for Migration reports that as of December 18, 706 people have lost their lives in the Aegean Sea in 2015.
