Tsipras and Abbas Discuss Middle East and Palestinian State in Athens

Tsipras_AbbasGreek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras met with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in Athens on Monday afternoon.
The two men addressed the Israeli- Palestinian conflict as well as the state of the wider region. During their conversation, the two leaders discussed how Greece can play a stabilizing role in the tumultuous region.
“(Greece is) actively committed to promoting a two state solution that will secure the establishment of viable, unified, independent and autonomous Palestinian state based on the 1967 borders with east Jerusalem as the capital. A state that will coexist peacefully and securely with Israel,” Tsipras said.
Despite having a close relationship with Palestine, Greece is among the countries that have not officially recognized the state of Palestine. Tsipras also claimed that the Greek parliament will unanimously vote on a decree that pledges to promote the recognition of the official Palestinian state when the time is right. However, the decree does not constitute an official recognition by the Greek state. Abbas will attend the ceremony.
In response to why Greece is delaying an official recognition of the Palestinian state, Tsipras noted that it is something that will happen when the time is right and until then Greece will pay a constructive role in finding a solution to the Israeli-Palestinian dispute.
Tsipras did claim that from here on forward, Greek public offices will use the term Palestine and not Palestinian authority.
Abbas claimed that it is the “last chance” to bring about a solution to the Israeli Palestinian conflict and noted that Palestine needs the assistance of the international community to secure freedom and democracy.
The Palestinian leader also thanked the Greek state and government for its support to and consideration of the Palestinian people’s struggle.
Earlier on Monday, Abbas met with Prokopis Pavlopoulos, the President of the Hellenic Republic.
