Campaign for the Greek islands
Activists have started an online campaign, requesting that the Greek islands receive the Nobel Peace Prize, for their response to the refugee crisis.
The “vote that the Greek Islands Receive the Nobel Peace Prize for their Contributions Aiding the Refugee Crisis,” was organized by Stephen K. from the United States. Stephen plans on sending the campaign signatures to the Nobel Prize Committee.
“The native populations of the Greek Islands in the Aegean Sea (and many other external, worldwide, non-profit organizations and diaspora Greeks) have done and are doing anything possible to help the displaced Syrian refugees and make them as comfortable as possible, although they themselves have very little to offer”.
“Despite being subjected to a severe economic crisis for many years. They have shown their Christ-like behavior with acts of ‘filotimo,’ love, respect and ‘filoxenia’ to those who are total strangers to them! Their acts and sacrifices shall not go un-noticed, because they are significant contributors to World Peace and Stability, and are clear examples of love for others in the world to use and to learn from,” noted the campaign.
So far the campaign has collected around 8,200 signatures.
Refugees Seek Shelter in Soufli
A video of the arrival of refugees in Soufli, Greece, has been circulating in the media since Sunday, January 3, showing the Greek village residents warmly welcoming 40 Syrian refugees.
According to a local news website the villagers and policemen provided the refugees with anything they needed in order to survive the blizzard. The refugees, coming from Turkey, had walked through the snow for hours to reach the Greek village. There were 10 children among them. When they were spotted by the locals, the refugees were quickly led to the church for protection against the cold and the snow.
The local policemen also arrived at the church, providing blankets for the refugees, while the residents provided holy bread. When the blizzard calmed, the Syrians were led to the local refugee center.
Large number of refugees to arrive at Piraeus port on Monday
The ferry Ariadne with 1,880 refugees on board is expected to dock at Piraeus port on Monday. The vessel has collected 1,270 persons from Lesvos and 610 from Chios.
The ferry Mykonos carrying 688 refugees from Chios and Samos arrived earlier at Piraeus.
From December 31, 2015 to January 4, 2016, the Greek Coast Guard has rescued 596 migrants and refugees in 13 incidents that occurred in the sea regions of Lesvos, Chios, Agathonissi, Kos and Megisti.
