Greek Govt Spokeswoman: ‘Proposal on Pension Reform is Final’

Olga GerovasiliThe Greek government’s proposal for reforming the pension system is final, spokeswoman Olga Gerovasili said in a radio interview on Thursday. At the same time, she left the possibility open for small changes in the amount of social security contributions paid by self-employed professionals.

Regarding an increase in employer contributions, Gerovasili pointed out that an exceptionally large reduction in the amount of social security contribution in recent years had done next to nothing to slow unemployment or “undeclared labor,” while a small increase the government is now discussing will not create a problem.

She said the government is still waiting for creditors to express their views on the government’s proposal, noting there were currently unconfirmed reports of a disagreement between the European partners and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) on the employer contributions issue, which she said are “not based on real facts.”
