Mitsotakis Pledges to Renew and Expand Greece's Conservative Party

Kyriakos_Mitsotakis_-_Ioannis_PlakiotakisKyriakos Mitsotakis pledged to renew and expand New Democracy upon officially taking over the presidency of Greece’s conservative party on Monday.
With the final results coming out, Mitsotakis received 52.43 percent of the vote while Vangelis Meimarakis received 47.57 percent. A total of 334,752 New Democracy supporters voted on the second round.
“We will try to renew New Democracy creatively and with absolute respect to its traditions and with awareness of the current reality,” said Mitsotakis as he took over the presidency from interim leader Giorgos Plakiotakis.
He pledged that under his leadership New Democracy would stand against the “populism of an ineffective government.” Mitsotakis said that his aim is to create a “big center-right party” and that nobody would be left out of this effort.
“This party has deep roots in Greek society. We will renew New Democracy dynamically; citizens voted for constructive renewal. It is our duty to make New Democracy the big center-right party that fights against populism. I want to secure the unity of the party and manage to creatively expand it. We will achieve our goal because it is a collective goal,” he said.
Mitsotakis had said prior to his election that he was planning radical reforms while maintaining party unity if elected. In that light, he will initiate procedures for a party congress in February.
Furthermore, he will meet with former prime ministers Kostas Karamanlis and Antonis Samaras on Tuesday. He will also meet with his rival candidates Vangelis Meimarakis, Adonis Georgiadis and Apostolos Tzitzikostas soon after.
