Is the Greek Cypriot Government Pushing for Recognition of Turkish as an EU Official Language?

Anastasiades-AkinciAccording to the Turkish Cypriot newspaper Havantis, the President of Cyprus Nicos Anastasiadis is in the process of initiating discussions to have Turkish recognized as an official EU language and as a second language inside Cyprus.
This would be quite an odd development, if true, but it could very well be a move on the part of Anastasiadis to get the Cyprus negotiation process on track once again.
Turkish is not an official EU language, since Turkey is not a member of the European Union, and the prospect of Turkey joining the EU is more elusive than ever. As such, it is most unlikely that such a request would be accepted even if made by another EU member state.
Be that as it may, one expects the President of the Republic of Cyprus to clarify his position on the issue.
