IMF: Four Million Migrants Will Enter Europe in Next Three Years

Migrants wait to be registered at a camp set up for migrants from Syria near Moria on the island of Lesbos.
The migrant inflow to Europe will continue at a minimum rate of about 1.3 million people each year for the next three years, according to an International Monetary Fund forecast.
The IMF will present its report on migrants and its impact on Europe’s economy at the World Economic Forum at Davos, Switzerland, currently in session. Overall the Fund estimates that the number of migrants who will enter Europe will exceed 4 million.
The report says migrants from the Middle East will short push the European economy, but the long term benefits will depend on the degree of their integration in local communities.
Looking at the issue only in financial terms, the IMF argues that the economies of host countries will benefit initially because of government investment in the reception of migrants.
“In the long term, however, the economic impact will depend on the degree of integration of migrants in the labor market,” the report says.
The report also says that there is a possibility that migrants will fill job positions that locals might have filled, despite rising unemployment.
