UN's Ban Ki-moon Now Has a 'Clearer' Picture on the Cyprus Peace Talks

ban-ki-moonUN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon now has a clear picture about the UN-led peace talks taking place in Cyprus, Cyprus Government Spokesman Nicos Christodoulides said on Thursday.
Christodoulides’ statement came after a meeting between President Nicos Anastasiades and Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci with the Secretary General at the World Economic Forum, taking place in Davos.
“The results of the discussion and the dialogue that took place justify absolutely the necessity for holding this meeting between the Secretary General and the leaders of the two communities,” he said.
Christodoulides also said that no concrete ideas were put forward by Ban at the meeting and underlined that “this is a Cyprus-led process, with both leaders taking the lead.”
Earlier on Thursday, Anastasiades had a meeting with U.S. Vice President Joe Biden, with Christodoulides saying that Biden is expected to convey “concrete messages” from the Cyprus President to Turkish officials in Ankara, where he is due to visit on Saturday.
“The issue of guarantees is expected to be included among these topics,” added the spokesman.
“The U.S. Vice President reiterated the support of the U.S. and referred to the need of a Cyprus solution to reflect the expectations of the Cypriot people,” remarked Christodoulides.
The discussion between the two sides was not only limited to the Cyprus issue, but also included security and energy concerns in the Eastern Mediterranean, as attested by the presence of U.S. Deputy Secretary for Energy at the meeting, confirmed Christodoulides.
The Cyprus issue was among the subjects discussed between Ban and Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu, during a meeting on the sidelines in Davos.
A Spokesman for the Secretary General said the two men also exchanged views on the developments taking place in Turkey and in the wider region, and discussed the situations in Syria and Iraq, including international efforts to combat the threat posed by ISIS.
