Refugee Crossing at Border Between Greece and FYROM Conducted Smoothly

The crossing of refugees from Iraq, Afghanistan and Syria at the buffer zone between Greece and the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM) in Idomeni was conducted smoothly today.
This is a positive transition on border crossings, especially in light of media reports, and a UNHCR publication that cites that tensions have increased along the Greek side of the border at Idomeni, since November 18, when the FYROM started admitting only nationals from the Iraq, Afghanistan, and Syria. Slovenia, Croatia and Serbia implemented similar screening systems by nationality.
The UN Refugee Agency has also reiterated its concerns over the consequences of border restrictions currently implemented by several countries in the Balkans. UNHCR recommends profiling people based on their protection needs and not on their nationality.
1,707 refugees arrived on Sunday at Piraeus port
The catamaran ‘Tera jet’ carrying 1,707 refugees from the islands of Chios and Lesvos docked on Sunday at Piraeus port. The Greek Coast Guard had taken all the necessary precautions to facilitate the refugees and migrants’ safe disembarkation.
