Greece Agrees to Provide Full Access to the 'Cyprus File'

cyprus-fileA historic agreement has been reached between President of the Hellenic Parliament Nikos Voutsis and the House President of Cyprus Yiannakis Omirou to access material in the ‘Cyprus File’.
According to an official announcement, during Omirou’s recent visit to the Greek Parliament, there was an agreement concerning the ‘Cyprus File’ which contains important details about the drama that occurred on the island during 1974.
Voutsis agreed to provide Cyprus with full access to the ‘Cyprus File’, which is material gathered by the Select Committee of the Greek Parliament in reference to the events that took place before and during the failed coup on July 15, 1974 and the Turkish invasion that followed.
For the purpose of the agreement’s implementation, Voutsis and Omirou signed a Memorandum bringing an end to the 42 year wait to gain access to previously unreleased details of the military coup and invasion.
The Memorandum includes the formation of two Committees from both parliaments which would be led by Secretary General of the Hellenic Parliament and General Director of the House of Representatives.
The Committees will cooperate with the aim of recording, classifying and digitizing the ‘Cyprus File’ and providing access to Omirou.
Material will only be used for parliamentary or scientific and historical purposes following approval from both the Greek and Cypriot Presidents and their respective parliaments.
