Hooded Men Break Protest Rally and Clash with Police

syn-1070_0A large group of hooded men broke up the protest rally at Syntagma Square by hurling Molotov cocktails at police, with the latter responding with tear gas.
More than 50,000 people participated in the general strike demonstration rally in Athens against the harsh economic measures the Greek government is planning to implement.
At around 2:00 pm, a group of a few hundred men who belong to anarchist factions and had their faces covered with hoods and motorcycle helmets started hurling petrol bombs at riot police and smashing shop windows. The police responded by throwing tear gas and stun grenades at the perpetrators, forcing the large crowd that was protesting across the Greek Parliament to disperse.
The fights escalated to the point that they forced the guards at the Monument of the Unknown Soldier in front of the parliament building to abandon their posts.
The perpetrators continued their attacks against police forces while retreating towards the Exarcheia neighborhood, an area known for harboring anarchists and other criminal elements.
At Exarcheia, the perpetrators threw molotov cocktails at the PASOK offices while setting trash containers on fire. Police tried to push them away from the area and skirmishes continued throughout the area.
