Abandoned Historic Train Station Turns into a Tavern in Greece

stathmos-trainou-650Vyroneia, a small village of the Serres prefecture in northern Greece, is steeped in history. Standing at the foot of the Belles mountain and near the rare biotope of Kerkini, Vyroneia went into the history map as the place where in the summer of 1913 in the final phase of the Second Balkan War, its small railway station served as Greek army headquarters. It was there that King Constantine of Greece and Prime Minister Eleftherios Venizelos met with the Bulgarian prime minister at the latter’s request for capitulation.
Almost 100 years later, in December 2013, the long-abandoned railway station turned into “Border Station,” a traditional tavern with local specialties.
The Vyroneia station was shut down in 2005. Like several such stations of the Greek Railway System (OSE) it was abandoned. Nena Savvides, the 22-year-old owner says that she and her family managed to overcome bureaucracy and salvage the station, turning it into a tavern, grocery store and eco-tourism facility for bicycle riding in the nearby Kerkini biotope.
“Border Station,” with a fame that has now transcended Greek borders, uses the old station lounge area for a quaint tavern with unique dishes based on local products. The station master’s office has been converted to small grocery store selling local and traditional delicacies.
Savvides says that the “Border Station” is not just a traditional tavern with dishes from the area, but also a place of cultural heritage and eco-tourism facility.
Those who go to the “Border Station” for the food only, will enjoy fresh buffalo meat delivered daily from local breeders, along with a variety of vegetables and herbs from the region. Local dishes such as kavourmas, kebabs and sausages are the mainstays in the long menu. Also, the place boasts a good selection of beers from Greek microbreweries.
