Greek Farmers Continue Blockades After Failed Talks With Tsipras

Greek FarmersTalks between Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras and representatives of protesting farmers on Monday evening failed to find a solution on a month-long blockade of Greece’s national highways.
Tsipras told the farmers that their “positions and proposals have to take into account the broader problems of the country, the fiscal conditions and framework we have to work in.”
However, farmers were not satisfied with the prime minister’s proposals. The farmers of the Tempi valley blockade decided to continue their protest actions, deeming the government proposals unsatisfactory. They immediately shut the road, trapping hundreds of vehicles and causing drivers to be enraged.
The Tempi farmers will close the Stomio bridge on Tuesday at noon, while they consider blocking the railway line as well.
The Microthives farmers were also disappointed by the government’s proposals and decided a new blockade on Tuesday at Kefalosis of Amiros, a point that has no alternative routes northward or southward.
Similarly, the Malgara blockade farmers were not satisfied with Tsipras’ propositions and decided to continue their protest actions.
The Peloponnese farmers in a statement issued shortly before midnight underline that “after today’s meeting with the prime minister and after the discussion of the proposals tabled, we once again bumped on the wall of the government’s analgesia, in line with lenders and the memoranda.”
And the statement continues, “Unfortunately, the usual logic of previous governments prevailed today, using the easy solutions of over taxation and indebtedness of the production sector. This is the tombstone of Greek society and the Greek state.”
Also, late on Monday night, Cretan farmers of the Oropedio union also decided a new blockade at the Malia-Oropedio section of the Agios Nikolaos-Iraklion highway.
