Balkan States and Austria Impose Severe Limits to Migrant Flows

IdomeniFollowing the Vienna meeting earlier this week between Austria and 9 Balkan states to discuss ways to tackle the migrant crisis, the governments of most of the countries that took part in the controversial meeting that caused much anger in Greece but also in Germany have now sealed of their borders.
The heads of the police forces in FYROM, Slovenia, Serbia, Croatia, and Austria have reached an agreement to restrict the flow of migrants to approximately 580 people per day, according to Slovenian police.
The police chiefs are “obliged to limit daily transit through Western Balkans countries to a number which would enable a control of every migrant according to Schengen rules,” the police said on Friday in a statement prepared for Reuters.
The decision on the part of several Balkan states to seal off their borders have created a small humanitarian crisis in Greece, as Greek Migration Minister Yannis Mouzalas said yesterday.
In the meantime, the European Commission has just announced that it is preparing an emergency plan to avert a humanitarian crisis in Greece, while NATO patrols in the Aegean sea are about to get under way in hope of putting an end to human trafficking from Turkey to Greece.
