Akinci: Ongoing Cyprus Talks 'The Last Chance' for a Solution

Mustafa AkinciThe ongoing negotiations to the Cyprus problem “are the last chance” to bring a solution, Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci told “Phileleftheros” newspaper on Sunday.
Akinci expressed the opinion that if solutions cannot be found with President Nicos Anastasiades then the next generation will have “to look for new models.” He did appear positive since he said that he continues to believe that a solution can be found in 2016. Akinci added that after May the leaders will be in a position to see “rapid progress” on the economics of a solution. He did say that the solution will be expensive, “but no solution will be even more expensive.”
In his interview the Turkish Cypriot leader had answered a number of questions that have to do with the Cyprus problem, including Turkey’s stance, natural gas, the rotating presidency, the weighted vote, separate majorities, human rights, bizonality, property issues, the Varosha, and the port of Famagusta.
On the issue of guarantees, Akinci said that he doesn’t want a system where anyone will feel under threat and added that the guarantees will not change, “we will sit with the guarantor powers and find a formula, which will be accepted by both communities.”
For the property issue, Akinci said that they recognize the right to property of each person, but the important thing is how the right will be exerted.
Akinci also said in the interview that in one area each community will have the majority, adding that people will be able to stay and move wherever they want, but not in large numbers, saying that they want a long-term sustainable solution.
Rotating presidency
On the issue of co-governance, Akinci said on the rotating presidency that the Turkish Cypriots will not pass on agreements without that provision, since they see it as part of political equality. He added on the Greek Cypriot position that they want a continuation on the Republic of Cyprus, in that model, there was a Turkish Cypriot vice-President who also had a veto vote. He said that in the new era they will not be competing with each other, but that they will be partners.
He added that if the Greek Cypriot community will allow a rotating presidency than they will make room for a weighted vote.
Positive stance of Turkey
As far as Turkey’s role goes, Akinci said that until now there has not been a negative stance. He said that they will see if there will be a change in the stance. Turkey, he said, has changed its approach from the past where they were saying that no solution is a solution.
Akinci closed tying the importance of the return of the city of Famagusta with the recognition of the airport that is illegally functioning in Nicosia.
