The situation in Idomeni continues to be exasperating as thousands of refugees and migrants are trapped at the borders since no one is allowed to pass.
Moreover the heavy rain that fell on Monday night made things worse causing further problems to the refugees’ stay, as they had to battle with the cold, the mud and the wind. The refugees were trying to protect themselves by covering their tents with thermal blankets, plastic bags and lighting small fires to keep warm.
Half of the number of the refugees and migrants that are trapped in Idomeni camp are children. Toddlers, infants and teenagers along with their families but as well as unaccompanied, try to survive the harsh conditions.
On Monday afternoon, three Syrian boys suffered electric shocks while playing atop a railway car. One of the boys was seriously hurt and had to be transferred nearby to Kilkis hospital with burns on his legs; luckily the other two did not require hospitalization.
The incident sparked reactions, with refugees and migrants occupying the train tracks as a means of protest. The protesters said that they are not going to back down, and they are even determined to block the humanitarian aid in order to protest their current situation. Shouting Angela Merkel‘s name and waving the German flag, the refugees and migrants were trying to attract Europe’s attention in order to act immediately.
Staff from the European asylum agency EASO were handing out leaflets in Arabic, urging the refugees to leave Idomeni and seek accommodation in one of many relocation centers that have been created in recent weeks. The EASO staff explained that once there, they can register for the European Union’s refugee-sharing scheme which could take up two to three months.
