Former house speaker Zoe Konstantopoulou has stated her intention to start her own party with the aim of bringing about the government’s collapse.
Speaking on Skai television late on Tuesday night, the outspoken politician announced the formation of a new leftist political movement while at the same time she blasted Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras.
“I am already Mr. Tsipras’ opponent. Of course I will take initiatives on (forming) a political organization and a political party and I will do all that is necessary to overthrow this regime,” Konstantopoulou said characteristically.
The former parliament president also said that she is “absolutely convinced that Tsipras had already agreed with creditors, even before the elections.”
Konstantopoulou described how her relationship with Tsipras broke down after he signed a new bailout agreement with Greece’s lenders in Brussels on July 13. She said that there was no Plan B and Tsipras signed the agreement as he had planned from the start.
“I had sent him a text message on the night of the negotiations, telling him that he had to come back, not to throw away the political capital that he had and not to throw away the hopes of so many young people who trusted him,” Konstantopoulou said, claiming that the prime minister never replied to her text message.
Speaking of the choice of Prokopis Pavlopoulos as President of the Hellenic Republic, Konstantopoulou said that Tsipras never consulted with his cabinet and associates on his choice and that he caught them by surprise with his decision.
Konstantopoulou left SYRIZA last summer and stood with Panagiotis Lafazanis, another party “defector” after Tsipras signed the third bailout memorandum of understanding. Lafazanis started Popular Unity and went to the September elections but the party did not collect enough votes to make it to Greek Parliament.
