Migrant Tragedies Continue Unabated

Idomeni_ximarosA new migrant tragedy has claimed the lives of three people on the blocked Greek-FYROM border.
FYROM police said three people, two men and a woman, drowned while trying to cross a river.
This latest migrant tragedy comes amid reports that eight people are missing after a migrants boat sank off the Greek island of Kos.
As of March 10, the number of arrivals of migrants, including refugees to Italy and Greece via Mediterranean Sea routes have topped 150,000, according to the International Organization for Migration (IOM), while deaths in the region now stand at 455, according to Missing Migrants Project.
Over 350 migrant deaths have been recorded so far this year in the waters between Turkey and Greece.
As Missing Migrants Project reports, “arrivals to Greece continue with a daily average of some 2,000. Updated unofficial data of arrivals to Greece by sea since the start of 2015 now stands at over 985,000. At current levels of arrivals, IOM expects the total number of sea-borne migrants and refugees to Greece in the current emergency to reach the million-person mark by the end of next week.”
In the meantime, there are reports that 500 migrants have left the Idomeni camp in Greece and are trying to locate an escape route through the neutral zone between Greece and FYROM.
According to the police, who are tracking their movement, the migrants seem to be trying to find an unguarded spot so they can enter FYROM.
The migrant caravan that left Idomeni camp includes men, women, and children. But Greek authorities said that even if they managed to enter FYROM, they will be immediately arrested by the local police.
The migrants seem to be aware of the fact that all borders are closed, but they opted to try their luck in finding an unguarded spot because they did not wish to relocate to another refugee camp.
The migrant caravan also includes old people and people with health problems, so another human tragedy may be waiting to happen just around the corner.
