FlyDubai Boeing 737-800 Crashes En Route to Russia; Cypriot Pilot in the Cockpit

A Boeing 737-800 passenger jet operated by FlyDubai Airlines, crashed while attempting to land in the southern Russian city of Rostov-on-Don on Saturday morning. All 62 people on board – 55 passengers and seven crew members – were killed when the plane crashed and burst into flames.
The pilot of the fatal plane crash was a 38-year-old Cypriot from Limassol, named Aristos Socratous, according to the Russian Ambassador to Cyprus, Stanislav Odadchiy. The Russian Ambassador mentioned the information in his comments to the state broadcaster CyBC and the information was also confirmed to CNA, by Cyprus’ Ambassador to Russia, George Kasoulides.
Aristos Socratous, was part of a seven member crew. He studied at Oxford Aviation Academy and moved to Dubai after finding employment there.
President Nicos Anastasiades has expressed his shock and deep sorrow for the loss of the 62 lives. At the same time, the President expressed his grief for the pilot who was among the victims of the tragedy. He also declared his support towards the family of Socratous, during this time of great pain and loss.
Anastasiades extended his deep condolences to the families of the victims, the Russian people and the Russian Government.
