Following a study on Santorini island’s capacity, local authorities will introduce a new system in order to manage the cruise arrivals during high tourist season which will allow a maximum number of 8,000 passengers per day.

The cruise passenger rationing system will aim to ensure that Santorini does not receive more passengers than the island can accommodate, and secondly, to ensure an even distribution of traffic across weekdays. There were days when Santorini received over 10,000 passengers and others when there was no traffic at all. The system will choose the best combination of arrivals per day in order not to exceed the limit, while allowing for less popular days to receive more arrivals.

According to data from the Hellenic Port Association, Santorini island received 636 cruise vessels in 2015, topping all Greek destinations. The number of cruise passengers came to 790,000 from ships mooring at Athinios and Fyra ports. In addition, the study by the University of the Aegean found that the local community of Santorini is aware of the social, economic and environmental pressures created by the overcrowding from cruise passengers due to the uneven spread of traffic.
