World Conference on Aristotle to be Held in Thessaloniki May 23-28

aristotelis.708The international congress entitled “Aristotle 2400 Years” will take place in Thessaloniki, Ancient Stageira and Ancient Mieza, May 23-28.
The Aristotle University celebrates the anniversary of the great philosopher’s birth with a conference where 25 important philosophy scholars and academics with expertise on Aristotle‘s work will lead the congress. The event has worldwide appeal as indicated by the 300 speakers from 40 countries and a total of 700 participants.
The aim of the conference is to promote the study of all aspects of the Aristotelian project, as the example par excellence of interdisciplinary knowledge, but also the prospects opened in the 21st century for a deeper understanding of ideas and contemporary problems by applying the Aristotelian philosophy.
The organizers also aim at opening the doors to the great Aristotelian ideas for the general public. Those who are interested in being introduced to the Macedonian philosopher’s work in the place where he was born.
Following the teachings of Aristotle, there will be parallel events for the general public where the ideas of the philosopher from Stageira on politics, ethics, values, justice, democracy, citizenship, human rights and education will be highlighted for the general public. Moreover, there will be opportunities for dialogue on philosophical issues related to other sciences, such as biology, physics, mathematics, astronomy, law, psychology, medicine, technology, art.
The ambition of the organizers is to make the conference the highlight of the events of Aristotle Year, as 2016 is declared by UNESCO. The fact that it is taking place at the university that bears his name and some events will take place at his birthplace, and Mieza, the town where Aristotle taught Alexander the Great, gives extra weight to their endeavor.
The conference is under the auspices of the President of the Hellenic Republic. It also has the support and collaboration of the Athens Academy, the Research Center of Greek Philosophy, the International Federation of Philosophical Societies / Fédération Internationale des Sociétés de Philosophie and the Greek National Commission for UNESCO.
