The man who hijacked an EgyptAir plane that landed in Cyprus on Tuesday morning is in the hands of local authorities, according to the Cypriot Foreign Ministry.
The plane took off from Alexandria, it was hijacked en route to Cairo, and finally landed in Larnaca. The hijacker, said he was strapped with explosives, a statement that proved not to be true according to Cypriot authorities.
Initially it was thought that the hijacking was a terrorist act, something that put Cypriot authorities on alert. The hijacker first released all Egyptian passengers of the Airbus A-320, then held the seven-member crew and four passengers hostages.

Police spokeswoman Nicoletta Tirimou said the hijacker had dropped a letter written in Arabic that was addressed to his ex-wife. Tirimou said the man’s ex-wife had arrived at the airport and that the couple had four children. The hijacker had also complained about the current Egyptian government and had demanded the release of female prisoners from Egyptian jails.

There was also confusion about the man’s identity. At a news conference in Cairo, Egypt’s Civil Aviation Minister, Sharif Fathi, refused to identify him.

Initially, a name that supposedly belongs to the hijacker was given, but authorities confirmed that the man was a different person than the one mentioned in the media.
