Planned Nude Performance at Athens Festival Causes Outcry [video]

550_334_497564A planned nude performance directed by Belgian artist Jan Fabre at the Athens and Epidaurus Festival this summer has caused an outcry.
The initial reaction over the festival was by Greek artists who protested the decision of Culture Minister Aristides Baltas to appoint Fabre as director of the festival for the next four years and Fabre’s intention to include mostly Belgian plays and exhibitions.
The response to the criticism was that the new director does not have time to audition works by Greek artists, therefore this year’s festival will be predominantly “Belgian.”
In addition, a 24-hour performance directed by Fabre that is scheduled for August 5-6 is full of nudity, thereby creating a controversy long before it is presented to the public.
The play “Mount Olympus: To glorify the cult of tragedy” includes gods of Olympus, demigods and mortal men appearing naked.
