Cyprus Parliament Approves Cremation Bill

Cyprus parliamentThe Cyprus House plenary unanimously approved a bill allowing the cremation of the dead.
Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Internal Affairs Yiannos Lamaris said that the law concerns a matter which is not easy to discuss, given the conservative nature of Cypriot society, adding that the Committee reached a final draft with consensus and that any possible inadequacies will be addressed once the law is put into force.
The law aims at regulating the cremation of the deceased and permits given to incineration centers, pursuant to specific procedures and under certain terms and conditions.
The Parliamentary Committee on Internal Affairs said in its report to the plenary that the Interior Ministry, after taking account of all information before it, decided to rewrite much of the law, so that the disposal of the body of any deceased by incineration would be permitted, only if people choose to be cremated, as their exclusive right, before their death.
