“The signing of the agreement between TAIPED (Hellenic Republic Asset Development Fund) and Cosco for Piraeus port authority (OLP) will cut the Silk Road shorter” stated PM Alexis Tsipras on Friday regarding the latest investment between Greece and China.
The PM said that since Greece is undergoing a development process in which restructuring and recovery of the economy is vital, this investment will give rise to future investments.
As ANA-MPA reports, PM Alexis Tsipras said that the government’s goal is to safeguard labor relations and protect the environment, while the president of Cosco group, Xu Lirong, noted that the sealing of the deal at Maximos Mansion constitutes a great honor for the group.
Tensions and Clashes At Demonstration Against OLP’s Privatization
While dock workers protested against the selling of OLP to Cosco, tensions broke with the riot police when the demonstration reached Amalias Ave and the protesters tried to go into Zappeio.
As the dock workers tried to reach Zappeio, the riot police had blocked the streets with police forces and vans, and proceeded with usage of teargas. After a short while, the demonstration left and returned towards the Parliament.
The Dock workers’ union-Port of Piraeus (OMYLE) and the Dock workers and Supervisors’ Union of Piraeus Port, announced that “the government, despite its pre-elections promises, is proceeding with the closeout of Piraeus Port (OLP) and Thessaloniki Port (OLTH). They threw in the rubbish bin all its declarations about public ports and after they took advantage of the dock workers’ struggle to gain power, they are now organizing fiestas with the neo-liberals of privatization.”
