Former president of the Aglaia Kyriakou Children’s Hospital, Haris Tombouloglou, was convicted by an Athens criminal court to an eight-year suspended sentence and a fine of 40,300 euros for extortion and bribery.
Tombouloglou was found guilty for demanding 25,000 euros from an advertising company in order to extend the contract for a campaign that raised awareness on childhood obesity.
A close associate of Tombouloglou was also convicted, for being a close associate in the same case. Tombouloglou’s associate was sentenced to five years and seven months of prison.
A request from the defendants’ lawyers for a milder sentence, on the basis of the accused having lived a crime-free life before and after the incident, was rejected by the presiding judges.
Tombouloglou was arrested in 2013 by police officers after accepting the money in marked bills; the exchange was captured on video.
