Metropolitan Church of Athens Unveiled

mitropoliathinon
The last nylon cover that was covering the Metropolitan Temple of Athens was finally taken off, revealing a fully restored and impressive temple. The scaffolding has already been removed from the exterior of the church and now what’s left to be done are several routine chores — for example cleaning the space – until the church is ready to start working again.
The history of the funding and restoration of the building of the Metropolitan Temple of Athens began in 1981 and the progress and process occurred very slowly and with delays. The building, founded in 1863, had suffered damages from an earthquake in 1981, when projects to initiate restoration had begun. However, no construction took place until 1999, shortly after which another earthquake brought an even more severe “hit” to the church — once again sparking interest in restoring the temple.
A decade later, in the beginning of 2010, the relevant contract was signed with the construction firm and the process for restoration finally got off its feet. However, due to the financial crisis in Greece, in the middle of the same year the funding of the restoration was suspended for one year.
