Surviving as a vegetarian or vegan in Greece is certainly not without its challenges. However, over the past few years there has been a welcome increase in restaurants catering to vegetarians and vegans who reside in Athens as well as tourists passing through. From the menu and prices, to the service and atmosphere, here are 3 top picks to check out.
The Amazing Avocado
When it comes to menu, prices, service and atmosphere, the blue ribbon goes to Avocado –Food for Life, located in the city center near Syntagma. They pride themselves on “healthy, seasonal and delicious cruelty free food” and hold a Certificate of Excellence by TripAdvisor. Anything you order from their menu is sure to be amazing.
The owners, Vivi and Eraji also happen to be the founders of NYSY Yoga and Pilates Studio, located across the street from the restaurant. In the spring of 2011 they opened Avocado, bringing their vision to fruition of “creating a spiritually minded, sustainable, caring community whose members are nourished by delicious, healthful food”. Avocado does just that – they offer healthy, tasty food, fresh juices and smoothies, organic tea and coffee and even macrobiotic dishes. The restaurant is modern and clean with exceptional service, as well as offering take away and delivery. More information can be found on their website: http://www.avocadoathens.com
Mama Mia! This is Some Great Food!
Another place worth checking out is Mama Tierra, also located in the center of Athens. This is probably one of the most reasonably priced restaurants you will come across in Athens. Their delicious mushroom burger is highly recommended – and it costs only €4.50! Their entire menu, which caters to vegetarians and vegans, is extremely economical and offers variety.
It should be noted that the owners focus great attention on customer service and satisfaction, which is just another added plus. Their Facebook page has more info:https://www.facebook.com/mamatierra.healthycuisine/
A Chilled, Casual Restaurant
Although Rosebud is not the most economical choice (some dishes are more reasonably priced than others), the portions good and the quality of food and service is always really high. The atmosphere at Rosebud is fun and creative with lively music and the plates they serve reflect these elements. A favorite is their fresh papardelle with porchini mushrooms flavored with lemon and thyme. Also, giving their fresh juices a try is well worth it. Find out more information at: http://www.rosebud.gr
