Several Greeks on 'Panama Papers' Lists

panamapapersThe famous “Panama Papers” list includes 223 companies and 400 beneficiaries directly linked to Greece.
The International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ) that has examined the documents of offshore companies and their shareholders, released long lists of names on Monday.
The 223 companies and 400 beneficiaries connected to Greece include names of businessmen, journalists, football players, lawyers and others associated with them and their companies.
It should be noted that the establishment of an offshore company or trust is not illegal. The establishment of such a company and its inclusion along with the shareholders in the Panama archives does not mean that the people associated with it have committed any offense or that they have broken the law.
Greek and foreign beneficiaries of offshore companies can be connected with another country, not necessarily the country of origin, if they have given address information in another country. The database includes the names of offshore companies, shareholders and beneficiaries, the details of their address and their legal representatives who are associated with the company. However their transactions are not listed.
Overall the database, which is publicly accessible at the following address: https://offshoreleaks.icij.org/, includes more than 200,000 offshore companies set up by the law firm Mossack Fonseca law firm. Every citizen can have access to the database, and also download the data made public the ICIJ.
The revelation of the Panama File has caused a global sensation since early April, when it was first published. It includes names of many former and current politicians, artists, football players, etc. The discovery has led authorities to investigate suspected cases of tax evasion and money laundering.
