Will Tsipras Wear a Tie at the Eurogroup Meeting on May 24?

TSIPRAS
Much ado was made of Greek leftist SYRIZA Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras’ choice of attire after his blitzkrieg into power after winning the elections on January 25, 2015. He wore his collar proudly unbuttoned in the presence of the world’s most powerful leaders, even rolling up to black-tie functions such as that of the UN General Assembly reception at the NY Palace Hotel in New York on September 28, 2015, defiantly without a tie. Now, right-wing Independent Greeks ANEL leader Panos Kammenos — a junior coalition partner in SYRIZA’s government — has given Tsipras two ties to wear at the next Eurogroup meeting on May 24.
The reason? Tsipras had said, upon assuming office, that he would refuse to wear neckwear until Greece’s debt problem was fixed. Kammenos believes that, now that there is light at the end of the tunnel, Tsipras can finally do what he has been yearning to do all along — wear a tie. Kammenos gave him two to choose from — one of the ties is coral-colored, whereas the other is a tricolored red, white and blue.
This is not the first time that Tsipras has been gifted a tie. In the past, Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi had given him a tie, whereas European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker had offered to give him his own tie.
Tsipras, however, had stayed neckwear-free for as long as Greece’s finances were in dire straits. And that’s one promise he has kept until now.
