Ongoing Lawyers' Strike Leaves About 300,000 Legal Cases Pending

Greek Lawyers on a Three Day Strike
The ongoing anti-austerity strike by the country’s lawyers, which is in its fifth month and opposes the latest measures in the security fund and pension plan, has caused great confusion in Greek courts as about 300,000 legal cases are pending. Court officials are expressing their concerns about how they are going to deal with the backlog once the strike is over.
As Kathimerini reports according to Athens Court of First Instance head Spyros Georgouleas, the 300,000 pending cases will take between seven and 10 years to plow through. Kathimerini also adds that when Georgouleas was asked about how the overloaded court system would cope once the strike ends, he said, “I don’t even want to think about it.”
Several major cases including corruption trials like the infamous “Siemens” case and the Vatopedi land swap affair have been postponed due to the strike. However, on Friday May 20th, the Athens Bar Association approved a Golden Dawn trial to proceed on Wednesday May 25th.
