Allegations Against Supreme Court Judge Bring Investigations

areios_pagos_thanou_bgenopSupreme Court Deputy Public Prosecutor Efstathia Spyropoulou under secrecy is conducting a preliminary investigation into the complaint filed by president of MIG financial group Andreas Vgenopoulos against Supreme Court President Vassiliki Thanou.
The investigation started a few hours after a letter sent by Vgenopoulos to Justice Minister Nikos Paraskevopoulos, noting delays in the investigation on the complaint. The MIG chairman sent along with the letter a copy of the petition criminal complaint against Thanou, since, as mentioned, ” he said that he has not yet been informed,” urging him to investigate complaints and disciplinary responsibilities of the Supreme Court President.
Vgenopoulos sent the letter after comments made by Thanou who spoke of smear attempts and an effort to intimidate judges by people who “are involved in criminal acts”, implying Vgenopoulos. The MIG president said that if the Supreme Court head believes such attempts are made, it is her official duty to conduct investigations and report her findings to Justice.
Vgenopoulos has filed a complaint against Thanou for a number of felony offenses, including, attempted bribery and extortion, in the case concerning himself. Thanou has denied the businessman’s allegations and described them as malicious, false and fabricated.
The MIG president is expected to be summoned to testify to the deputy public prosecutor of the Supreme Court and clarify the allegations made.
The justice minister ordered an investigation regarding allegations that there is interference to the prosecutors investigating the case. The investigation was ordered after a complaint by prosecutor Yiannis Angelis against Supreme Court Prosecutor Efterpi Koutzamani.
Koutzamani, on her part, ordered a preliminary investigation on the Angelis allegations, thus generating an informal war within the justice system. Angelis has been called to testify in the investigation, but has not responded.
In addition, a disciplinary investigation is in progress against Appeals prosecutor Georgia Tsatani, who has claimed that Deputy Justice Minister Dimitris Papangelopoulos interfered during investigations on the Vgenopoulos case.
