The U.S. Vice President has urged the leaders of the two communities in Cyprus to resume their meetings as soon as possible and expressed the continued US.. support to both sides as they work to reach a successful agreement before the end of the year.
According to a written statement from the White House, Vice President Joe Biden held telephone conversations yesterday with President of the Republic of Cyprus Nicos Anastasiades and Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci.
“Vice President Biden spoke to President of the Republic of Cyprus Nicos Anastasiades to congratulate him on successful parliamentary elections, reaffirm that U.S. policy towards Cyprus remains unchanged, and encourage President Anastasiades to seize the moment to negotiate a settlement that would reunify Cyprus as a bizonal, bicommunal federation,” the statement says.
It adds that “subsequently, the Vice President spoke to Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci to convey the same message on the need to keep moving forward on settlement negotiations.”
The Vice President urged both leaders to resume meetings “as soon as possible.”
“Vice President Biden pledged continued U.S. support to both sides as they work to reach a successful agreement before the end of the year, and praised the commitment and courage of the leaders for the historic steps they are taking to reunify the island” the press release concludes.
Meanwhile, regarding what happened in Turkey on Monday, during the UN World Humanitarian Summit, which Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan hosted, Anastasiades has made it clear that he will not accept, in any way, a downgrading of the Republic of Cyprus.
He also said that what happened in Istanbul was bad handling on the part of the UN, stressing at the same time that such bad handling shall not be tolerated.
Erdogan sent an invitation to the leader of the Turkish Cypriot community Mustafa Akinci to join heads of state and government at the official dinner. Akinci was flown on a special flight to Istanbul and attended the dinner. President Anastasiades did not attend.
“I do not accept to see the Republic of Cyprus being downgraded in any way. What happened in Turkey was bad handling which will not be tolerated,” the President stressed.
