From May 26 through July 30 Jean Nouvel will exhibit Triptyques at the Gagosian Gallery in Athens.
Appropriately titled, the three-paneled colored mirrors, each in an edition of six make up the Triptyques exhibit. With the central panel fixed to the wall, the side panels and cantilevered panels are set to be movable, creating different images and variable dimensions.
Each art piece reflects images in different colors as the mirrors are colored in light orange to his signature color of red. They sit at different orientations and find distinct meanings when both opened and closed.
“The mirror is a piece that you want to live with, in which you reflect intimate images—images from your home; you can capture a piece of a window in it somewhere,” Nouvel says.
Jean Nouvel is considered to be a vital protagonist of structural architecture and its importance in France. He was born in Fumel in 1945 and studied at the École des Beaux-Arts, Paris. Some of his most notable buildings are the Musée du Quai Branly, Paris; Fondation Cartier pour l’Art Contemporain, Paris; Lucerne Culture and Congress Centre, Switzerland; Torre Agbar, Barcelona; and Guthrie Theater, Minneapolis.
He is currently working on several projects including the Louvre Abu Dhabi, and the National Museum of China (NAMOC).
