A report by the Panhellenic Center of Environmental Studies (PCES) found that just 96 of the 153 most popular beaches of Attica and other surrounding regions were suitable for swimming, whereas studies on the quality of water found that 57 were “extremely dangerous” for human health. The study took place at popular beaches of Attica, the island of Evia, Loutraki, Corinth, Lavrio, etc.
Samples were collected from these beaches using sterilized bottles that were opened in the sea and sealed once water was collected. These were then transported to certified and collaborative university labs. Water was analyzed and results ready in six hours.
Islands
For the first time, scientists, biologists and other researchers will continue gathering water samples at popular island beaches until July 15. Results on water quality will be gradually published until July 25.
