ESM President Urges Greece to Take Ownership of Required Reforms

klaous-regklingkGreece needs to take ownership of the bailout program because delays of the progress review took a toll on the country’s economy, said European Stability Mechanism President Klaus Regling.
The ESM chief spoke during an Economist conference in Athens on Wednesday. Regling said ESM will continue to support Greece but the Alexis Tsipras government must take full ownership of the bailout program.
“The first review of the Greek program took too long. This is a drag on the economy,” Regling said. “Greece needs stronger ownership of the adjustment programs.”
However, the head of the euro zone rescue fund recognized Greece’s progress in reforming its economy and said that the 7.5-billion-euro bailout fund disbursement by ESM is proof of the recognition.
Regling reiterated the view of other top European Union officials that Greece has the support of its partners in remaining in the euro zone.
“Europe will not abandon Greece, it is part of the European family,” he said.
