Olympiakos coach Marco Silva, aged 38, suddenly and unexpectedly quit from the helm of the team, citing personal reasons. The Portuguese coach bowed out on Thursday just as he was about to enter his second season on the bench. The club offering a brief media statement:

Olympiakos announces to its fans that the coach, Marco Silva, has tendered his resignation due to personal reasons. His resignation was accepted.”

No sooner was the resignation announced, that Olympiakos replaced him with former Deportivo La Coruna manager, Spaniard Victor Sanchez.
The resignation comes at a time when the team is already in its preseason preparation spell in Austria where it will stay for 10 days. The players were in shock when Olympiakos chief executive Yiannis Vrentzos told them of the resignation shortly before it was made public.
There is speculation in Portugal that Silva may replace Fernando Santos as the Portuguese national team’s coach. Commenting on the resignation, Olympiakos spokesman Costas Karapapas said that there was something unusual in Silva’s behavior from the first day of the preseason and the club had already turned to Sanchez even before Silva severed ties.
