Negotiators Continue Work on Cyprus Reunification

cyprus_negotiationsThe two negotiators, Andreas Mavroyiannis and Ozdil Nami, continued on Monday morning their work in the context of the ongoing UN led process for the reunification of Cyprus, CNA sources said, adding that the two are set to meet again on Wednesday.
Cyprus divided in 1974 when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. UN led talks resumed in May 2015 aiming to reunite the island under a federal roof. The two leaders, Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades and Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci have been meeting regularly.
In statements after their last meeting on Thursday President Anastasiades said that the negotiators “focus on the matters which come up and which need to be discussed further.”
He also expressed the hope that “gradually, through this intensive dialogue we will finally have an outcome acceptable by both communities.”
The same sources have said that the two negotiators will meet again next Wednesday morning to continue their work.
In his statements President Anastasiades said the progress achieved so far in all the chapters under discussion has been encouraging, adding however that important chapters still remain to be discussed.
