Greek hoteliers note a drop in local bookings to tourism destinations around the country. The decline in numbers for August, traditionally the main period for Greek vacations, has left the country’s hoteliers hanging with just last-minute reservations to hope for.
The decline in reservations is the result of the increased tax burden that Greeks will be expected to pay in the second half of the year, starting in July. Apart from a decrease in bookings, there has also been a drop in the number of days that Greeks go on vacation. The President of the Hoteliers Union of Chalkidiki, Gregory Tasios, said that reservations made by Greeks have been limited to five days from the 7-10 days of overnight stays noted in previous years. A doubling of tax, has also limited the ability of hotel operations to offer discounts and offers to clients.
Santorini’s Association President Manolis Karamolengos said that arrivals and bookings at tourist lodges in Santorini have declined. This negative trend is particularly noticeable in the hospitality industry.
