Greece is undoubtedly one of the greatest places on Earth to witness the amazing galactic phenomenon, the Milky Way.
Located in the Northern Hemisphere, the Milky Way appears in the southern half night of the night sky like a strip of white light.
There are endless opportunities to see the Milky Way in Greece, due to the southern European country’s geography with mountains, sea and islands that provide the ideal circumstances to witness breathtaking nighttime skies.
The optimal time to see and photograph the Milky Way in Greece is in the month of July.
In June NASA selected a photo by Alexandros Maragos of the Milky Way over the Temple of Poseidon in Sounio as the Astronomy Picture of the Day.
Maragos, an Athens-based filmmaker and photographer captured the Milky Way and all of its splendor and mystery over the skies of Greece from various locations. The photos are spectacular!
His collection is titled The Milky Way Over Greece and can be seen at: https://www.facebook.com/themilkywayovergreece
