Greek TV License Review Tosses Out First Contender, Leaves Ten

Television Landscape
The government-run competition for four private TV licenses received a total of eleven bids. So far, George Karatzaferis private TV station, ART (City), has been excluded from joining in the tender according to a decision by the General Secretariat of News and Communication. The bid was scrapped as the file applying for the tender did not have the required stamp worth 30,000 euros as required by Law 4339/2015 and 1/2016.
In the past, Karatzaferis was a member of Greek Parliament and president of the right-wing Popular Orthodox Rally (LAOS). he served as an MEP and holds liberal conservative views that he often broadcasted through his relatively minor private Greek TV channel Teleasty (former Telecity).
The other 10 bidders for one of four private TV licenses are: Skai S. A. ♦ Star Channel ♦ ANTENNA TV S. A. ♦ Dimera Media Investments Limited ♦ Alpha Satellite TV S. A. ♦ Ioannis-Vladimiros H. Kalogritsas Television ♦  Alter Ego ♦ Epsilon TV, Radiotileoptiki S.A. ♦ Independent Telvision Content Provider S.A. ♦ MEGA CHANNEL, Tiletypos S. A.
Accusations
The government was accused on Friday of trying to control the media by Greece’s advertising and broadcasting industries. They said that the decision to create a digital platform for TV advertising that will replace traditional contracts between companies is an effort to shift power.
