The oldest olive tree at Vouves, a village 30km west of Chania, is 2,000 years old. Its branches were used during the Athens Olympic Games 2004 and during the Beijing Olympics in 2008.
An astro-photographer from Chania, Christos Kotsaftis, photographed the tree. “This beautiful but deeply rooted olive tree is the oldest in the world and continues to produce olives until this day,” he said. “It is at a village at Ano Vouves in Chania, Crete. Its age cannot be fully defined, however it appears to be at least 2,000 years of age,” he said.
Stones from two nearby tombs are dated as far back as the geometric period, around 3,000 years ago. The tree has a 41 foot diameter (12.5 sq. meters) and has been dubbed a protected natural monument for Greece.
A photo of the remarkable tree was published by NASA, the second photo was shot by Kotsaftis showing another region in Chania.
