Stefanidi Wins Gold in Pole Vault at European Track & Field Championship

stefanidi1Greek athlete Katerina Stefanidi jumped her way to gold on Saturday in the pole vault event at the European Track and Field Championship in Amsterdam by successfully completing a 4.81 meter jump.
Teammate Nicole Kyriakopoulou finished strong in fourth place in the final.
Stefanidi first cleared a 4.70 jump and then on her third attempt completed and set a new championship record of 4.81 meters.
“I am ecstatic,” she commented to reporters at the European Championships. “With 4.70 meters I was pretty sure I had won the title, but I also wanted the championship record.”
Although Stefanidi was born in Athens, she currently resides and trains in the USA. The stefanidi26-year-old athlete is considered to be a sure bet of winning a metal at the Rio 2016 Olympics next month.
President Prokopis Pavlopoulos congratulated the athlete saying her performance made Greeks proud. “Your top European performance, which is added to your many great successes, honours Greece and your generation and makes us feel especially proud, both for your abilities as for your future prospects,” Pavlopoulos said in a statement. “Our warmest congratulations and wishes for strength, particularly ahead of the Olympic Games in Rio,” he added.
Stefanidi received congratulatory messages from Parliament President Nikos Voutsis, Sports Minister Stavros Kontonis, and members of the New Democracy, PASOK and Potami political parties.
